Anorexia and bulimia defence and support

El Defensor del Menor y el Presidente de PROTEGELES tras la firma del acuerdo con los representantes de la industria de Internet: MSN-Microsoft, TERRA, WANADOO y YAHOO, en el Día internacional de la Internet Segura.

Child Ombudsperson and PROTEGELES' president
after signing an agreement on the Safer Internet Day
with the main companies of the Internet Industry in Spain:
MSN-Microsoft, TERRA, WANADOO and YAHOO

Since the launching of its Primera Campaña contra la Apología de la Anorexia y la Buliiai en Internet (First Campaign against Anorexia and Bulimia Defence and Support on Internet), in June 2005, PROTEGELES has made possible the taking down of at least 350 pro-anorexia and pro-bulimia webpages. Closing these pages has been possible thanks to the collaboration between PROTEGELES' and the main ISPs (Internet Service Providers). Most of these pages were notified to PROTEGELES by Internet surfers throught PROTEGELES’ Reporting Illegal Content Hotline.

Apart from closing these pages, PROTEGELES is running a personalised helpline that, up to today is given professionalised assistance to more than 200 girls and teenagers from 9 different coutries. PROTEGELES has a team of pshycologists that work on the Helpline on daily basis.

However, PROTEGELES actions to tackle Anorexia and Bulima Support on Internet include many other activities, like studies on the problem (which were lately published by the Spanish Child Ombudsperson), the creation and lauching of alternative webpages in an attemp to balance the negative effects of pro-Ana and pro-Mia pages (www.masqueunaimagen.com and www.anaymia.com ) and last but not least, the organisation in May 2005 at the Madrid Convention Centre of the First National Congress on Anorexia and Bulimia on Internet.
